Chapter 9 – James

James lay in bed for a long while after Julia left. He’d have preferred to spend the morning in bed with her—he had more than a few ideas on how they could spend this pleasant Saturday morning—but he couldn’t exactly complain about the date they’d had, could he? Not after the way it had ended. God, all the memories were rushing back of their time together back on the east coast, that brief but explosive interaction … he’d half convinced himself he was imagining it. Surely sex couldn’t be that good. But last night had made it clear, once and for all, that they had a unique kind of chemistry.

It was bizarre. James had never believed that sex with the same person was ever going to be as good. There was a law of diminishing returns, that had always been his theory … sex the first time was exciting because it was new, because of the thrill of the chase, because of the glory of conquering new territory … but every repeat performance he’d had hadn’t quite measured up. Sure, it was fine—he’d never had a bad time in bed (nor had he ever left a partner unsatisfied, for that matter—he prided himself on that particular detail) but every time he’d slept with a woman for a second or third time, the fireworks had been less explosive. It was a big part of why he was so horrified by his friends settling down into monogamy with the same woman for the rest of their lives. What about their sex lives? If he was starting to get bored with sex by round three, how the hell were they managing to enjoy round fifty, round one hundred, round one thousand?

But then he’d met Julia. And their explosive night together those years ago … that hadn’t been a fluke or wishful thinking on his part. Their second round together had been every bit as explosive … and to his shock, in a way, it had even been better. Spending the evening with her, talking to her, getting to learn about her—not just the details of her life, but the way she moved, the way her smile crinkled the corners of her gorgeous brown eyes, the way she ducked her head shyly with a pleased blush rising to her cheeks when he paid her a compliment … all of that stuff had somehow intensified the experience. As though knowing her better had deepened their connection, intensified the passion of their sexual connection somehow. This was all brand new for James, who had previously viewed conversations with women as necessary groundwork for getting them into bed. He realized with a shock that not only had spending non-sexual time with Julia made making love to her more rewarding … but he had actually enjoyed it a huge amount in its own right.

He was missing her, lying next to him in the bed. Missing not only the feel of her body, the warmth of her soft skin, the glow of her eyes … but her presence, too.
